Come celebrate life with the Cactus Gallery family THIS Saturday, October 8th from 7-10p. "Muerto en vida," (Walking Dead) is the title of our 7th Annual Día de los muertos (Day of the Dead) exhibit.
A few people have asked me, why "muerto en vida?" Well, as many of us have been struggling and have been a bit "spiritless" as of late, I thought the title to be fitting for this year's exhibit. But alas, it is also a time for celebration - a celebration of life and a time to be thankful, positive, grateful and appreciative of what we DO have.
Show runs October 8, 2011 - November 8, 2011
Day of the Dead is commonly known as a Mexican holiday. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. Altars, marigolds, offerings, skulls, masks, humor and tears all encompass this years old tradition.
Similar observances, festivals, and parades occur elsewhere in many Latin American countries, as well as Europe, and like celebrations appear in many Asian and African cultures.
The exhibit will feature more than 40 artists who have created original works just for the show: oils on canvas, acrylics on canvas and wood, dolls, assemblage, photography, wood cuts, sculpture and tons of mixed media works! Come out and support local artists and small business. In conjunction with Northeast Los Angeles (NELA) Second Saturday Gallery Night. For map/info: http://www.nelaart.com/
If you are interested in seeing work for an artist in particular, in commissioning a piece or in availability of prints, please let me know.
Also, if you see a piece you would like to purchase or simply have a question regarding any of the works, please contact me:

In old-time Finnish Karelia, the birthplace of my ancestors, dirge singers, or 'crying women', were respected figures of village life. When someone died, it was their job to help ease the shared sorrow of those left behind. Their lamentations were often improvised, using certain common elements. It was the mark of a good dirge singer to be able to bring everyone attending a funeral gathering to tears.
There were in fact four kinds of laments performed communally: death laments (sung at funerals), marriage laments (usually about the family losing a daughter; as the bride would move to live with the husband's extended family, she could visit her birth home only once or twice a year), laments about going to war (no explanation needed here), and 'occasional laments' (those composed for a specific situation or event).
At the beginning of the 20th century, many of these old traditions began to disappear. When I was growing up in Finland, it all seemed ancient history, quaint and a bit primitive. Now, of course, I can't help but admire the psychological as well as spiritual wisdom of such rituals. And interest in these traditions has reawakened of late both in academic circles and among people in general. There are now courses taught by contemporary 'crying women', and stories are collected from those fortunate enough to remember the old ways.
