Digital gallery for Dia de los Muertos IX Exhibit

Follow Cactus Gallery's board Dia de los Muertos IX on Pinterest.

Dia de los muertos is a traditional Mexican holiday that focuses on gatherings of family and friends to remember those who have died. Altars, marigolds, offerings, skulls, and Monarch butterflies are commonplace during this time and it is reflected in the art created for the show. More than 20 artists - acrylics on canvas and wood, art dolls, paper mache, paper cut outs, graphite on paper, sculpture, and mixed media works.

For purchase, contact Sandra at semastroianni70@yahoo.com.

Opening Reception: Saturday, October 18, 2014 * 3p-7p

Please join us in giving thanks for own lives and for those of who are no longer on Earth. Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a traditional Mexican holiday that brings the advent of death to light, making the concept of "the end" less scary, and helping people feel a strong, healthy connection to the spirits of their loved ones.

In order to honor and remember those who have died, we welcome you to bring your photographs and "ofrendas" (offerings) to add to our community altar. "Ofrendas" can be any thing that was important or special to the deceased, such as tools, awards, hats, etc... including favorite refreshments and foods. In Mexico, it is believed that the long hard journey from the afterlife back to Earth should rewarded with nourishment and refreshments for the returning souls.

Our altar will include the presence of the four elements: water, earth, wind, and fire.  No offering can be complete if one of those elements is missing, and their symbolic representation is a fundamental part of the offering. In addition, many cempazuchitl (marigold), called the flower of death, will be included, as the Aztecs believed that the strong scent could wake the souls of the dead and help guide them back for the celebration.

Patricia Krebs at Cactus Gallery

Cactus Gallery is pleased to present "Romance of the Residual Realm," an exhibit featuring new paintings, hand sculpted pendants, and a few mixed media works by artist Patricia Krebs. This show, Patricia's 7th solo show for Cactus Gallery, is bittersweet as she will be leaving the US next week to live in Argentina once again.

Opening reception: Saturday, September 13, 2014 * 4p-10p
Show runs: September 13 - October 12, 2014
Gallery hours: Saturday and Sunday 11a-5p and by appointment.

Romance is not necessarily tied to a love story. In fact, it may refer to a literary genre of epic stories, often filled with fantasy creatures, where perhaps a hero goes on a quest. Romance may also refer to an artistic movement, one arising from a reaction against the scientific rationalization of nature. This movement, which validated intense emotion and spontaneity as an authentic source of the aesthetic experience, also harnessed the power of the imagination to escape the confines of industrialization.

In "Romance of the Residual Realm," our heroine finds herself in a world destroyed, on a quest to create and give new meaning to whatever is left. In the same way as the narrative, Krebs created the works for this exhibit with remnants and abandoned elements, including canvases and paint that other artists discarded. Please join us to celebrate Patricia's journey!

Cactus Gallery is pleased to present THE SONG OF THE BIRDS, our 6th annual bird themed group show. People have always been fascinated by animals. Birds, in particular, seem to have sacred and secular meanings, which can be positive and negative, and their use is evident in religion, music, mythological tales, and visual art. These feathered creatures can convey emotion or even comment on society. Please join us to celebrate their powerful symbolism as seen through the eyes of 40+ artists.

This show features an eclectic collection of media: oil and acrylic on canvas and wood, mixed media on canvas and wood, textile, paper mache, ceramic, linocut prints, pencil, pen, and ink on paper, prismacolor, chalk pastel and colored pencil on paper and mylar, polymer clay and paper clay sculptures, hand stitched felt and mixed media sculpture.

Soupe de Coeur

The sun bows respectfully as night arrives to take it's place.
The Duchess is off playing croquet with the Queen.
The footmen are tending to the pig.
And in a little house about four feet high,
In the middle of an open field,
Beside a lake of tears,
A cook carefully removes the heart
Of a large green bird.
