Cactus Gallery is pleased to present Light and Shadowfeaturing multimedia works by fourteen female artists. Our featured artist is Ulla Anobile. Light and Shadow examines the ideas of light and shadow in myth, nature and the mystery of the psyche.

Most of us like to declare ourselves children of love and light, and aim to eradicate our personal darkness. But for most, it is the darker, shadowy side of life where growth, germination and new beginnings originate.

Only by acquainting ourselves with our own darkness can we hope to become fully human. Only then may we stop pointing our fingers at, and reveling in, the darkness of others. Yet on the other hand, by not over-identifying with - or romanticizing - the shadowy realm, can we hope to learn to draw the line between ordinary human weakness and true evil. Join us for this exploration of both the literal use of lights and darks and also the metaphorical use.

Joining Ulla in this exploration are: Donna Abbate, Jaclyn Alderete, Lacey Bryant, Ashley Fisher, Rasa Jadzeviciene, Theresia Rosa Kleeman, Patricia Krebs, Mavis Leahy, Susan Malloy, Janet Olenik, Lena Sayadian, Kelly Thompson, and Jessica Ward.

About our featured artist: Ulla Anobile's paper mache/fiber work is inspired by such folk art forms as the mask, the doll, the totem and the altar. Her ideas come from dreams, mythology and folklore, as well as from childhood summers spent in the unspoiled Finnish countryside. Her work often emphasizes the spiritual aspect of nature. Birds and owls, both mythical and real, are among her favorite subjects.

Among her fiber work are dolls, wall hangings, ornaments and finger puppets. She embellishes her pieces with cross-stitching and other kinds of embroidery; skills learned in the traditional (no longer existent) school for girls she attended in her native Finland.

Her sculptural masks have been included in reviews of contemporary mask making at the Anchorage Museum of History and Art in Alaska, The Clymer Museum in Ellensburg WA, Pico Rivera Centre for the Arts, the City of Los Angeles World Airports Exhibition Program and Pierce College, CA. She was invited to make a one-of-a-kind ornament for the White House Blue Room 1999 holiday tree. She has participated in solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums throughout the United States as well as in England and Finland. Ulla, a former journalist, was born in Helsinki, Finland. She has lived in Los Angeles since 1975.
